Social Security administers the Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income; these may also be a resource for your young adult as he/she begins to live independently. Both of those programs have incentives that allow a person with disabilities to work without being penalized financially. You may want to help your son/daughter apply for services even if you think he/she might not be eligible. You can also appeal if benefits are denied.
PASS "Plan to Achieve Self-Support"
A PASS Plan is an incentive to allow a person with a disability to work and still receive SSI benefits. By writing a PASS plan, certain expenses needed to get and keep a job MAY be excluded from countable income for a person receiving SSI. Local agencies such as Vocational-Rehabilitation, Mental Health Offices, Social Security Administration, and United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) can help you write a PASS plan. The next link is an example of a PASS plan.

Supplemental Security Income
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a Federal program that's run by Social Security. This provides cash to meet basic needs like food, clothing, and shelter for people with disabilities, people who are blind, or elderly people with little or no income. Children and adults can get benefits because of disabilities or blindness. If your child is not already receiving SSI, he/she should apply one month before his/her 18th birthday. IPUL or other Idaho parent networks can help you with the SSI application process. To check out SSI, click on this link: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/ssi/index.htm

What is a Work Incentive?
People with disabilities receiving Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) can get work incentives. Social Security's “work incentives” help serve as a bridge between disability benefits and financial independence.
These work incentives include:
• Cash benefits while you work;
• Medicare or Medicaid while you work; and
• Help with any extra work expenses you may have as a result of your disability.
